"So back before you met Wrath, you wanted to date a sociopath with a hair trigger, the vocabulary of a New Yorker, and a voice that makes the testicles of grown males borough [sic] into their pelvic girdle like they’ve been threatened with the business end of a cattle prod?" -Rhage to Beth[1]

Wrath, son of Wrath is the king of the vampires and a non-active member of The Black Dagger Brotherhood in the series of the same name by JR Ward. He's mated to Beth and they are the main characters of the first and twelfth books of the series, Dark Lover and The King, respectively. They have a young son, Little Wrath.

Biography[]

The last pure-blooded vampire, Wrath was born to father Wrath the Fair and Anya in the year 1665. In 1672, Wrath was brought by his father to his first meeting with the Brotherhood. His first lesson in statecraft was when his father had him memorize the names and locations of the graves of the traitors who attempted to assassinate Wrath the Fair, even witnessing four of them.[2]

In 1677, at the age of 20, his parents faced a tragic death to the lessers. He was only able to survive because his father hid him away while he watched, albeit with partially impaired vision, the Lessers murder his family. Left alone in the world, he worked as a stableboy and was barely able to keep himself fed.[3]

His transition came to hit him in 1690 and he was young and confused because his parents hadn't explained the process. A female vampire that appeared to him in a dream-like state fed him. He grew six inches, developed muscles and developed the physical strength to avenge his parents. Wrath eschewed the throne, devoting himself to hunting the Lessening Society over the next few hundred years instead.

In 1739, Darius brings Vishous to meet him.

In 1917, Wrath meets Phury and Zsadist for the first time.

In 1932, Wrath is asked by Darius to honour the last rites as Phury is on the brink of death. Phury manages to live.

In 1958, Wrath was in an accident by an Edsel which was driven by a human man and his wife as a passenger while Wrath was chasing a lesser. Tohrment deals with the humans and then he takes Wrath to Havers' clinic. Wrath wakes up a day later. The day after that, he checked himself out of the clinic without saying a word to anyone who cared for or worried about him; he was a toxic person.

In 1985, Wrath made the decision to kick out Murhder from the Brotherhood, because he deemed him mentally unstable and dangerous.

In 2005, Darius asked him to help his daughter Beth through her transition. Since Wrath is pure-blooded and Beth is a half breed, her chances of surviving by taking his blood are high. Already having a shellan and not really feeling right about the situation, he denied his request asking to find someone else. After Darius' death, he felt obligated to watch over her. They quickly fell for each other and Wrath releases Marissa from their engagement. Wrath then helped Beth go through her transition and bonded to her. Wrath and Beth mated and she became his Queen.[3]Havers received the news that Wrath had let go of Marissa and approached Zsadist to hire him to kill Wrath for the disgrace to his sister. When Z warned Wrath, the king allowed Havers to live despite his treasonous ways.

Wrath stepped down from active duty as a Brother in the field and stepped into the role of King of his people. Since becoming king, Wrath lives by his favourite quote: "Rule by the heart and by the fist," as demonstrated by his refusal to play glymera games. He even disbanded the Council, preferring to work directly with the people, rather than allowing the Council to dictate issues for the race according to their own goals and corruption.[4]

His eyesight had always been weak and especially sensitive to light. It worsened over time until he eventually became entirely blind. He always felt inferior about it, but hadn't fully realized it until Beth was pregnant with LW.[5]

Personality[]

Having been a Brother long before he took on the role of king,[3] Wrath doesn't have much patience for rigamarole or tiptoeing around an issue. He can be ruthless when required, but protective of the most vulnerable of his people. While he didn't think much of humans at first, he seems to at least no longer think that they're little more than tailless rats.

Physical Description[]

Wrath2 copy

Wrath II, The Blind King, and George

Wrath is rarely seen without his wraparound mirrored sunglasses or George, his golden retriever service dog. He's 6'9", 273 lbs[6], with pale green eyes, a cruel face (Darius described him as "evil" looking[7]), and black hair that falls straight to his hips with a pronounced widow's peak.[3]

He wears the king's ring, which is set with a massive black diamond, on the middle finger of his right hand[8] and a braille watch. The tattoos on his forearms detail his royal lineage. His wardrobe consists of black fighting leathers, black tees, shitkickers, whites for meeting with the Scribe Virgin, and one (1) black Brooks Brothers suit.[6]

"Elizabeth" and "Wrath" are carved into his back in Old English lettering and he has the mark of the Brotherhood on his left pectoral.

Skills[]

Abilities[]

  • Dematerializing
  • His heightened sense of hearing and smell gives the ability to know who is where in the room and even their mood. He can communicate with John after a fashion in this way.

Relationships[]

Beth[]

Since he never particularly liked humans, Wrath never imagined he'd fall in love, let alone bond and mate, with a half-breed. When she proved to be wise and supportive, he found that he could not be the king the race needed without her. He thinks her neck's the sexiest part of her[6] and typically pulls her into his lap to feed her by hand at every meal.

Butch[]

Wrath discovered that he's related to Butch somewhere in his lineage, making them cousins of sorts, and welcomed him into the Brotherhood and his family.[8]

Darius[]

Wrath still misses his best friend[6], and yet, if it hadn't been for his death, he might never have bonded with Beth.

Fritz[]

Wrath may be the king of the race, but when it comes to the mansion, Fritz pretty much rules all things non-security related. He, as well as his Brothers, would kill anyone for deliberately hurting Fritz.

John Matthew[]

John strongly reminds Wrath of Darius, which can be bittersweet for Wrath. Although he's his brother-in-law, Wrath watched John grow up and their relationship is slowly becoming that of two adults rather than the sort of father-son that they had when he was younger.

Lassiter[]

As much as he gripes about the angel, Wrath doesn't really mind Lassiter all that much. He took a bullet for Wrath once, so he feels like he owes him.[6]

Marissa[]

He's always been fond of his former shellan, but in a more protective capacity than a romantic one. Like most of the shellans living at the mansion, other than his own, he treats her like a beloved sister.

Qhuinn[]

To save Qhuinn from murder charges over Lash's death, he came up with the neat solution of making Qhuinn ahstrux nohstrum, a sort of bodyguard, to John retroactively; but only after determining Qhuinn's intent was to protect John and not to punish Lash.[9] Later, Wrath had Saxton rewrite the Old Laws to allow for anyone who proved themselves worthy to join the Brotherhood, rather than keeping membership restricted to those of particular bloodlines, thus giving the Brotherhood the chance to offer membership to Qhuinn.

Payne[]

Wrath and Payne's friendship developed when he was unable to fight in the field due to losing his sight and she was trapped on the Other Side. They'd meet up for regular sparring sessions, but he couldn't see her resemblance to Vishous. When she broke her back during a fight, he felt responsible for her and brought her to the mansion where he had Manny treat her.

Phury[]

When Phury went off the deep end in his addiction, Wrath kicked him out of both the Brotherhood and the mansion but welcomed him back when he got sober and turned his life around. Now, he and Beth meet with Phury, Cormia, and the Directrix at Rehvenge's great camp to check on the progress of the Chosen and their well-being; he's extremely proud of Phury.[6]

Rehvenge[]

The head of the glymera contacted Rehvenge, enlisting him to have Wrath killed. The plan fell through because Rehvenge never intended to kill the King. [10] Since then, they've become close allies.

Vishous[]

Ever since they met they've gotten along well when they're not fighting since Wrath's a bit of a bulldozer and V pretty much does what he wants.
