"V was the Brother with the intelligence, the mystical visions, born directly of the Scribe Virgin's body. He was also incapable of bullshitting anyone about anything. It was just not part of his hardwiring, that incredible brain of his too busy to care about whether or not he offended or postured properly or couched things in ways that were palatable to the inquirer." -Trez about Vishous[1]

Vishous is a vampire and a member of The Black Dagger Brotherhood in the series of the same name by JR Ward. He's mated to Jane Whitcomb, twin to Payne, and one of the main characters of the fifth book in the series, Lover Unbound.

Biography[]

In 1704[2], Vishous was born to The Scribe Virgin and Bloodletter. He is estranged from his mother, who had been forced to give him up after his birth and had no part in his raising. As part of the agreement with the Bloodletter, the Scribe Virgin turned her son over to Bloodletter when he was just three years old. The deal required him to stay with his father for 300 years after the first three of his life. [3]

There, he was starved, beaten, and deprived of even the most basic of comforts, such as books. Prior to his transition, he had a vision of a young male in camp dying.[4] A week later, the male from his vision died as predicted and the superstitious camp grew suspicious of him.

During his transition, none of the females would willingly feed him, too afraid to come near him in the belief that he'd been possessed by spirits. The Bloodletter asked him if he'd been the one to kill the pretrans from his vision, and V lied in confirmation, desperate for blood.

After Vishous' transition, the Bloodletter felt threatened by his growing powers. Immediately after the change was complete, about 24 hours sooner than usual for a male straight out of his transition, he set up a fight between Vishous and a soldier from whom V had stolen food a few weeks prior. Naked and armed with only a broom, he faced off against an established fighter wielding a spiked mace. Either he had to resort to using his hand and confirming the fears of the camp or he would lose and be raped by his opponent, proving to everyone that he was no threat. Despite the disadvantages, Vishous still won by watching his opponent's habits and dodging until he found an opening for a groin strike. When the fighter doubled over in pain, V struck him on the temple, knocking him out cold.

His father taunted him before the entire assembly for his reluctance to rape his opponent, and goaded by those words and with hatred in his heart for his father, he took out his rage upon his conquered foe. His first sexual encounter was, as a result, something ugly and violent, all about taking power from another and establishing his dominance over them.

That still wasn't enough for the Bloodletter told him that because he fought dirty and was reluctant to rape his opponent, he was a weak coward and, unable to take any more abuse, V attacked him.

Threatening him with his left hand's power, Vishous made a prediction before the whole camp: "You shall see your end in a wall of fire caused by a pain you know. You will burn until you are nothing but smoke, and be cast upon the wind." As punishment and to diminish the threat that Vishous posed, the Bloodletter had warnings in the Old Language tattooed along the left side of V's face and groin indicating he was cursed. Then, when the Bloodletter tried to have V castrated, his soldiers were only partially successful before V's entire body glowed white and incinerated those physically touching him during the atrocity. The entire camp was too scared to touch him after that, allowing him to drag himself out of the cave and into the woods. There was salt mixed with the dirt of the cave floor which sealed his wound and set the scars on his groin.

Eventually, V healed. With no money or food and the clothes on his back, he walked aimlessly until a kindly Vampire merchant he met on the road took him in. They travelled together to Rome, where they parted ways. In Rome, he ran into his first Lesser attacking a young pretrans and his mother, a fallen Chosen. Vishous killed the Lesser, but the Chosen tragically died. Vishous found a family to take her son in and he later went on to become Murhder's father. Since the boy was of warrior stock, word got out and Darius wanted to see him rewarded for his bravery and brought him to meet Wrath. The first time they met in 1739[5], he and Wrath hit it off. Eventually, the subject of his parentage came out, and it was revealed that he was of the proper bloodline to become a Brother. He was then inducted into the Brotherhood in that same year.[3]

Vishous is the computer genius and the technology guru of the Brotherhood. If there's a software program to be hacked or a security camera to be set-up, Vishous makes sure it gets done. He also seems to be the only one monitoring the Brotherhood's financial investments via some software program he wrote to assure their money continues to compound interest so they can use it to purchase goods and services such as guns, cars, medical equipment, etc.

As a sexual dominant, V has a love for pain mingled with his pleasure, including leather, bondage, candle wax, and whips. The penthouse he maintains at the Commodore in downtown Caldwell, next door to Rehvenge's apartment, is where he enjoys such delights. He used to bring random submissive females there to be tied down and used as he wished. They always had to wear masks since V always felt dirty afterwards, and he preferred the illusion of anonymity. [6] The only woman to ever tie him up, however, has been Jane, and the only male to ever do so was Butch. [3]

When he learned the Scribe Virgin was his mother, it was when she told him that he was to become the Primale. Shortly afterwards, he met Dr. Jane Whitcomb when he was shot in the chest and admitted to St. Francis Hospital when humans find him dazed and confused. Their early relationship suffered several setbacks, the first of which was V kidnapping Jane in the first place.[3]

The Scribe Virgin stopped Vishous from resurrecting Jane as a soulless undead after she was shot dead unexpectedly by a Lesser who trailed him to her house; instead, she sacrificed her pet songbirds to turn Jane into a ghost who can choose to become corporeal when she wishes. She will never age, never be able to bear children, never have a true heartbeat, but her spirit remains with him until she decides to go into the Fade. This selfless loving act, oddly enough, is what eases his anger towards his mother for leaving him with his brutal father.[3]

Trusting Assail is something V probably won't ever do. The two aren't exactly friendly whenever they are in the same room, primarily because V has never gotten over the fact that Wrath had nearly died in Assail's home, while under the male's protection (V takes his security seriously), and also because Assail refuses to pick a side in the coming war between the Band of Bastards and the Brotherhood. V has not yet been shown interacting with Nalla or any other young in the series, but he had previously commented that having a young wasn't in the cards for him (he hadn't wanted children).

Personality[]

Vishous is an extremely intelligent and deeply feeling, but an emotionally troubled man. He can be sarcastic and inflammatory at times, but he's brutally honest as well; you always know where you stand with V. While he can outwardly cold, it's glacial self-control over his inner fire. He's known to be attracted to men and women, although human men are not his "tail of choice."[6]

Physical Description[]

Caucasian with golden-brown skin, he is about 316 years old, weighing 260 pounds, and 6'6" in height. He has black hair that he keeps short in back and long around his face[7] and a neatly-trimmed goatee. His eyes white with blue rims. Warnings in the Old Language are tattooed on his face over the left temple, hip, and around the left eye.[8] He is partially castrated. [3] Sometimes, his left eye will turn completely black, including the white.

Unlike his best friend and roommate, V only owns fighting leathers and workout clothes.[6] He keeps his left hand covered with a lead-lined black leather glove and wears a black Nike Sport watch.[5] He bears the Brotherhood's mark on his left pectoral and Jane's name is carved into his back; he pierced his tongue for her.[9]

Skills[]

  • He speaks 16 languages[10], which include:
    • ASL, which he taught himself when he heard John Matthew was mute,[5] English, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, the Old Language, and Welsh[11]
  • Talented with computers.[10]
  • He handcrafts the Black Daggers that the Brotherhood uses in combat. He assures that each dagger is well-maintained, customized for the wielder, and sharpens them when necessary.[10] He is also the one who destroys the daggers when a Brother is killed, vaporizing them with his left hand.

Abilities[]

  • His left hand is blessed/cursed as a result of his divine lineage:
    • A simple touch can short-circuit a human's brain[12] and turn almost anything to ash in an instant. He is not harmed by its use.
    • It can also be used to cleanse the taint of the Omega from others, usually from Butch.[6]
    • When not in use, he covers the hand with a black leather lead-lined glove.
    • Touching Jane with this hand makes her solid. The longer the contact, the larger the area; if they cuddle, she becomes wholly solid and stay that way for awhile.[5]
  • He is gifted upon birth to see the future in metaphorical visions. This power, however, is something Vishous considers a curse, as he can foresee the death of those he loves, but not predict the time period or exact method of it happening. This gift further estranges him from others, not just because it makes them feel uncomfortable, but also because he hurts every time the vision shows him tragedy.
  • He is the one who casts the mhis, invisible shielding around the mansion and areas where battles between the Vampires and the Lessers take place to turn aside the observation or memories of humans or to confuse them so they don't continue forward.
  • He has the power to alter or block people's memories like most Vampires, but unlike others, he can also hear thoughts on occasion. He tends to listen to loud rap music to help drown out the voices.[10]
  • Using his left hand, he cleanses Butch of the Omega's essence when he inhales a Lesser. [6]

Relationships[]

Butch[]

His best friend and the brother of his heart, Butch and Vishous have a relationship that goes deeper than anything either of them ever believed possible. At one point V thought he was in love with him, but he confused openness and their deep connection for romance.

Jane Whitcomb[]

Since they're are so alike, Jane and Vishous can be a formidable team, but they can also butt heads a lot. They continue to have a colourful sex life and are child-free by both choice and biology.

Manny Manello[]

At first, Vishous didn't like him because Manny used to fancy Jane when they'd worked together at the hospital. When Manny treated Payne after her injury, they began to fall in love and V thought the man was a fickle playboy merely out to seduce his twin and wouldn't be able to protect her as a human. In the end, everything worked out for the best: Manny and Payne received V's blessing for their mating, and once it came out that Manny was somehow related to Butch, too, that seemed to cement Vishous' change of heart over the guy.

Payne[]

Since the only family he'd had for so long were his parents who either abused him or ignored him for centuries, he's terrified of losing his younger twin sister. Recently, he's recognized her skill in battle and come to terms with her desire to fight in the field against their enemies, although he does not want to ever be paired with her while on rotation because he'd be too distracted trying to assure her safety.

The Scribe Virgin[]

He had a short, complicated relationship with his mother, who renounced him as her son and absolving them both of any obligations towards the other.[13] In gratitude for the sacrifice of her pet birds to bring Jane back to him, he hand-carried birds to her courtyard until he filled the tree again. Their relationship tanked again when he discovered he had a twin sister kept imprisoned all her life by their mahmen.

Xhex[]

He has a rather strained relationship with Xhex because of the one night stand she had with Butch. Since he holds Butch near and close to his heart, he hates to think of them together. That later soothes itself when Xhex shows vulnerability towards his Brother John Matthew. It also doesn't help that they're very much alike.
