This page documents the list of inconsistencies in the novel series. Not all timeline discrepancies are noted here, for more information see the Timeline.

The Brotherhood[]

In Lover At Last, before Qhuinn's induction into the Brotherhood, the following is stated: "In all the aeons of the Brotherhood, there had never been anyone inducted who wasn't the son of a Brother and a female of Chosen blood."

In The King, the Brotherhood re-pledges their loyalty to Wrath the Fair by stabbing the floor with their signature blades[1], however, later Beth is told that they pound the floor with their fists for the king, but the queen's honoured with their daggers.

Characters[]

When Vincent diPietro purchases an engagement ring, the owner of Marcus Reinhardt Jewelers is owned by James Richard Jameson whose great-grandfather purchased the business from the original owner, Marcus Reinhardt.[2] When Trez and Selena go there for the same purpose, he refers to him as "Mr. Reinhardt."[3]

Continuity Errors[]

Matthias is naked when he wakes up on Jim Heron's grave[4], but when he's discharged from the hospital he has a wallet with money and ID. It's not stated whether that was the work of the divine or demonic or was simply an oversight.

Wrath wore his "only pair of non-shitkickers" to the human ceremony where he married Beth,[5] but when they consummate the union, he's wearing shitkickers.[6]

Physical Descriptions[]

Jim Heron's Mansion[]

  • When Jim first moves in, it was listed as having eight bedrooms, but later Jim thinks it's 33 or 34. It was also 25 acres and then "a couple of acres."[7]

Layla[]

The Mansion

Mary[]

Selena[]

  • In Lover Unleashed and again in The King, she is described as having pale skin, pink lips, and pale blue eyes. Her hair is described as long, thick, and midnight black in colour. In The Shadows she is described as having skin the color of "cafe au lait."

Trez[]

  • His eyes at different times have been described as brown and at others as black.

Terminology[]

The term for grandmother has been listed as both "granhmen"[11] and "granmahmen"[12], although that could be like the difference between "grandma" and "grandmother," it is uncertain.

Timeline[]

J.R. Ward claims all events from Dark Lover to The Thief, including the Black Dagger Brotherhood Legacy series, transpired within a two (2) year time frame after Dark Lover, which began in 2005, but the timelines of the novels do not match that contention:

  • "Millionaire Matchmaker" was a television show that first aired on the Bravo Network on 22 January, 2008, yet Layla and Beth both referred to it and its host, Patti Stanger, in The King.
  • "Real Housewives" was a television show that first aired on the Bravo Network on 21 March, 2006. It's spin-offs did not begin until 2008, however (the first on 4 March, 2008, followed thereafter by multiple other versions of the show, approximately one new spin-off per year thereafter. The series is currently on-going as of January 2020. Beth makes a reference in her thoughts to the multiple spin-offs of the series of "Real Housewives" in The King.
  • Marie-Terese met Mark Capricio in 2000 and they waited until they were married to become physically intimate, but in Covet Robbie's stated as being 7 years old with his birthday in October.[13]
  • Payne and Vishous were born in 1704 and in Lover Unleashed, she states that she is "three hundred and five years of age," which would place the novel in 2009.[14]
  • "Sister Wives" was a television show that first aired on the TLC Network on 26 September, 2010, yet Beth refers to the show in a conversation with Saxton in The King.
  • Miley Cyrus released her musical pop single "Wrecking Ball" on 25 August, 2013, yet Wrath references the song (in his thoughts) in The King.
  • At the beginning of The Chosen, Xcor states he'd known Layla for a year and a half by that point, which would have compressed all of the events prior to The Chosen down to the first six months of 2005.
  • "Stranger Things" was a television show that first aired on Netflix on 15 July, 2016. Vishous comments in The Thief about wanting to watch the first season on Netflix.
  • In Blood Kiss, the shellans at the mansion watch Magic Mike XXL, which came out in 2015, and talk about watching Guardians of the Galaxy, which was released in 2014.[15]
  • The events of Envy supposedly take place at the roughly same time as Lover Unleashed, which would be 2006, but Veck's age and birth year place it in 2011.[16]
